Hot Tip: How to print irregular shapes on the UV printer

Printing square or rectangular shapes are easy to print on a UV printer, but what do you do when you need to print an irregular shape?

The trick is to turn whatever shape you have into a rectangle! Let's check it out with MFA Photo, Video, and Related Media student, Fernando Sancho.

First prepare a document with the shapes you want printed, and then - on a separate layer - duplicate the shapes with just the outlines. Save both layers as two different .eps files (one with what you want printed and one with just the outlines). Now we're ready to set up the media. On a piece of paper print your outlines. (Make sure not to print your outlines directly on the printing bed itself.)

Once the outlines are printed, line up your material with the outlines. In Fernando's case we were printing on 1/8th inch acrylic.

When the media is aligned to your satisfaction it's time to readjust the settings. Because we are essentially printing from the same document the only thing you have to change is the height.

Adjust the height until the top of your material is 1mm away from the printing head. Hit enter, remember you can keep the width and length, so now you're ready to print!
