Finger-like appendages

This evening, second-year  MFA Fine Arts  student Marianna Peragallo came in with a tricky request: she needed to bore holes into the center of wooden dowel to effectively create a hollow tube.

The ultimate goal for Marianna was to create finger-like appendages for a wearable sculpture.

Because the pieces were too large to use in the drill press, the metal lathe was re-purposed so that the spinning dowel would be plunged laterally into the stationary drill bit -- the opposite of the typical tool to material interaction, however, the results were equally as accurate!

These parts are for a new piece that will be debuting at a show that Marianna is included in at the SVA Chelsea Galleries, opening on May 1st!
