Friday March 13th, 5:00pm - Olalekan Jeyifous - Artist in Residence Presentation
Friday, March 13th 5:00pm
The Visible Futures Lab is proud to introduce out latest artist in residence, Olalekan Jeyifous.
Olalekan creates hand drawings, digital illustrations and architectural constructs that are strongly rooted in “borrowed and invented narratives”. More often than not these narratives explore dystopian interventions into urban spaces, in ways that communicate their participation in, and alienation from a larger world. His artworks are also inextricably tied to his cultural identity and discursive upbringing which was characterized by perpetually adapting to, and exploring new places.
As a professional artist, Olalekan has exhibited at The Kitchen, The New Museum of Contemporary Art, The Studio Museum in Harlem, The Soap Factory, MoMA, The Drawing Center, and la B.A.N.K. in Paris. He has also received a number of awards and grants for his artwork such as a fellowship from the New York Foundation of the Arts [NYFA] in the category of Architecture and Environmental Studies, an H20 International Film Festival award in the category of Freestyle/Experimental film, and grants from the New York State Council on the Arts and the Brooklyn Arts Council.
During his residence Olalekan will translate his digital “installation studies” and speculative architectural designs; many of which examine spatial conditions through urban planning strategies, and architectural tropes and traditions that relate to the subject at hand, into whimsical yet engaging commercial items intended for consumption by a broader consumer audience. The result will be the production of a series of playful sculptural artifacts, architectural “toys”, post-modern “doll-houses”, and miniature urban cityscapes reimagined as hand-made game boards.
Join us as Friday March 13th from 5:00pm to 6:00pm as Olalekan introduces himself and speaks about his work and his plans for his time in the VFL.
The Visible Futures Lab hosts a new Artist in Residence every 7-weeks. Residents are selected from divers fields including industrial design, performing arts, robotics, and conceptual arts. During their time at the VFL, residents research and develop projects that explore and expand the philosophy of purposeful and extensible art and design.
