LASER CUTTING

The VFL has three professional grade laser cutters for cutting and engraving projects.

Laser Cutting Training and Certification

Access to VFL laser cutters requires successful completion of Laser Cutter Training and passing the certification quiz. Training lasts about 1 hour and covers VFL safety policies and proper use of the machines.

  • The VFL stocks a variety of acrylic, chipboard, and plywood for use on the laser cutters.

Only plywood purchased at the VFL may be used for projects that require cut-through.

  • Pricing is calculated based on materials purchased for cutting and the amount of time a job takes to cut or etch. This is calculated in the software during your appointment.

  • 1 hour and 2 hour appointment time slots are available. File set-up can take anywhere from 10-30 minutes, so schedule accordingly.

2 hour appointments are recommended for first time laser cutter users.

Print time varies based on the complexity and scale of the design. Some prints take a few hours, some take days. Plan project timelines accordingly.

Etching projects take much longer than cutting projects, generally speaking. Job time will depend on the scale and complexity of the file.

  • Laser cutting jobs cannot be left unattended. Individuals must stay with their laser cutting jobs at all times to monitor for issues such as excessive smoke or flames.

Individuals who need to leave an active laser cutting job for any reason or amount of time must inform a VFL staff member and may not leave until assured that a staff member is monitoring the job.

Individuals who leave active laser cutting jobs unattended will be at risk of losing laser cutting privileges.
